There is no "typical" day at Millward Brown Optimor. The role of a
consultant at any level is to help clients achieve the highest possible
impact in their businesses, to be an integral part of the Millward Brown
Optimor engagement team, and to have fun.
Consultants are encouraged to think about the big picture from day
one. To help the client as much as possible, each team member needs to
understand the overarching objectives set out for the project. Partners
and Directors are always there to guide the team on how to deconstruct
the big picture objectives into manageable work streams and activities.
Activities include a vast set of skills that the consultant acquires
over time: interviewing clients, data gathering, analyzing of data,
synthesizing data into cohesive documents that tell the "story" about
the client's situation, developing recommendations, presenting findings
to clients, managing other team members, handling client relations, to
name a few. These skills over time add value and depth to the
consultant's professional track of excellence and form the basis of what
we call the "consulting toolbox".
Working with the team is informal and fun. Engagement teams can be as
small as 2 people, or as large as 5-6 people. In either case, the
environment is very intimate and collegial, as people tend to spend
significant amounts of time with their team. Several team members
develop deep and lasting friendships that stay with them for years to
come. Team members often travel together for client engagements, and
those are great opportunities to bond. Travel is an integral part of
consulting, but at Millward Brown Optimor it is sprinkled throughout the
engagement. It is rare for a consultant to be away from home for more
than 2-3 days in a row.
